BOCA RATON, Fla.- The inaugural season of men's lacrosse came to an end for Lynn University in a 19-5 loss to sixth-ranked Tampa on Saturday night. The Fighting Knights finish the season 1-10 overall and 0-5 in Sunshine State Conference action. Tampa's win gives the Spartans the first-ever SSC Regular Season Championship finishing the regular season 12-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Pregame ceremonies honored Lynn's two seniors, William Port and Joey Bacarella.
Lynn took an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter when Brian Kiel scored with 12:45 left on the clock. UT scored three goals over the next 12 minutes to lead 3-1 at the end of the opening frame. Justin Fitzpatrick scored a fast-break goal in the opening seconds of the second quarter to extend the Spartans lead to 4-1. Kiel fired a shot from the top of the crease to cut Lynn's deficit to 4-2. Tampa scored five unanswered goals to end the half with a 9-2 lead.
Danny Egan scored to open the second half while Tyler Janvrin recorded his team-high 11th assist of the season for the Blue & White to trail 9-3. At the end of the third quarter UT had extended its lead to 14-3. Egan scored two more goals in the final 15 minutes for his second hat trick in as many games.
Taylor Ferrino made 20 saves in goal for Lynn while grabbing a team-high ten ground balls before Jason Conner came in making three saves of his own. Tampa was led by Kyle Hemrick who scored a game-high five goals while Jake Rooney and Conor Whipple each had four goals. Whipple had a game-high six points where he dished out two assists for the Spartans. Trevor Calleja won 16-of-21 face-offs for Tampa while Andrew Failla earned the win between the pipes with six saves.
Kiel finished the season with a team-high 15 goals to become the first career leader in goals in a season for the Fighting Knights. Janvrin led the first-year squad in points with 11 goals and 11 assist for a 21 total points. Ferrino made 191 saves as Lynn's starting goalkeeper while Chris D'Angelo won 55 percent of face-offs at the 'X'.
